How to search engine optimise your website.

If you've got your own website you will know its a constant battle to mantain your search engine ranking or maybe you can't even get into the search rankings? If your looking at this page now you have probably searched for it, and all i did was a few essential things to help you find us. So lets get started.

If you would like to Download our guide simply scroll to the bottom of the page.

Meta tags and Meta data.

Everyones heard of Meta tags and meta data. If you haven't then you must have been hiding under a rock for a very long time. Meta tags are HTML code that tell a search engine what your website is about along with some keywords for your website, the idea behind this is when someone puts a search query into a search engine your website will show up easier if the search terms match what your Meta tags say. Below is the main meta code you should have in your web page. This should go right after your <head> tag in your HTML.

<meta name="description" content="insert a description in here over 50 characters long and include the commas at each end" />

<meta name="keywords" content= "insert upto 20 words in here that you want to attract search engine users to, each word needs to be sperated by a comma then space apart from the last one, don't forget to keep the commas on each end" />

Thats right, the tags meta name are the most important, one is for your website description and the other is key words for your search engine searches. Now we will add some less common meta tags to your web site. These arn't as important as the above meta tags, but can make all the difference.

<Meta name="Author" content="insert your name here">

This tag decribes who wrote the article or web page, so if people want to find information from the same person it will be easily searchable. Next we will use the title tag, this is not essentially a meta tag but having a title tag means you can have a title that will show up on search engine results. This is just as important as the description and keyword meta tag as search engines use the title of your page to help with search queries.

<title>insert your page title here</title>

Now you have the most important meta tags on your site your site will appear better in search results. Any other tags you may find are usually obsolete disfunctional to search engines or have a negative impact on search querie. If we place all our tags together they would look something like this:

<head>

<Meta name="Author" content="insert your name here">
<title>insert your page title here</title>

(other head information goes here)

</head>

These tags together will ensure you have the best possible chance of having visitors reffered from search engines.

Optimise your images for search engine results.

Not many people are aware but it is possible to optimise your images for search engines, usually people just insert an image and thats that. You want more from your images. Many search engines make it possible to search for images and over recent years weight has been added to the names of images, lets take an example. To insert an image you just have the following code.

<img src="http://www.jonsjobs.info/images/howto.png">

So now if we make your image a clickable hyperlink you can use this to link another part of your website together creating an internal backlink.

<a href="http://www.jonsjobs.info"><img src="http://www.jonsjobs.info/images/info.png">

If we add an alt tag to this image it will then display alternative text if the image is not shown. This helps the search engine as they don't know what your image is meant to be. Imagine this as a one word keyword.

<img src="http://www.jonsjobs.info/images/info.png" alt="Jonsjobs.info>

Adding a long description to your image will increase the chances of your site being landed on by the description of your image. It will also increase your chances of receiving visitors who use the search images option, upon searching for one of my other sites this way my images we're listed at the top along with a hit counter image i use, when the images we're indexed this hit counter was showing 12 visitors!

If we put all of these tags together then it would make one neat search engine friendly package, so let's go ahead and do that.

Optimise your links for search engine results..

We have optimised our images for search engine results, let's do the same for our hyperlinks. Hyperlink optimisation is very similar to image optimisation. The only downside is there is only one item you can add to a hyperlink to make it more search engine friendly. If we look at a standard hyperlink it would look like this

<a href="http://www.jonsjobs.info">How To</a>

If we add a simple title tag to this we can make it so when a user hovers over the link a description is shown, it can't be too long as the user may quickly lose interest. This title is also searchable by search engines so have something constructive that will heplp your site.

<a href="http://www.jonsjobs.info" title="How to guides free and easy to understand">How to guide</a>

So your probably thinking why i chose a title like that in the example, well quite simply, people are always wanting to find out how to do things, they want to know for free and they want to be able to understand. This makes quite a high possibility of someone typing into a search engine exactly what my title tag says .

Sitemaps..

Now we move onto Sitemaps. Sitemaps are designed just to allow search engines to crawl your site easily. The easiest way to do this is to have one web page with all of your links on it. This is called a sitemap. In order to have this in place all you need to do is create a file named sitemap.html and put all of your links on it in an unformatted way then place a link to your sitemap on every page of your site.

Search engine tools..

Most people think downloading programs will get you a rank you always wanted, Most of these programs don't work. Exceptions to this are search engine tools. These are tools provided by search engines to help you with rankings. A useful tool is Bing webmaster tool, this allows you to upload a file to your web server meaning your site will be crawled within a short period of time and search results will be updated frequently. Since Yahoo, Microsoft and Bing are all working together it makes it alot easier to get your website recognised. Google also do a similar program called google webmaster central.

You should also backlink to your site as much as possible. backlinks from high ranking sites are the better alternative as they carry more weight so your site will appear higher in rankings. Do not spam people with your backlinks as it won't be appreciated. Instead try to bargain with other website admins and maybe exchange backlinks etc. A highly recognised and free service is the DMOZ directory. This is a website designed in categorising all websites, so it wants as many useful links as possible.

Do nots!.

OK, pay close attention to these simple points. These will stop you from losing ranks in search engines.

Do not buy links. Many people offer links for cash, Not only will the majority of these links be of low quality but search engines are wise to it and derank any website backlink abusing. It also means people like me that have to deal with these kind of companies on the forum will just simply delete your links and ban your IP address. So if you find you can't access the forum, you know why.

Do not use site submission software.Using submission software is not as effective as doing it by hand. Yes you may be able to submit to over 2000 search engines with one click, but you would be seen as more credible to search engines if you was to hand submit your site to Yahoo/Bing, Google and the DMOZ directory and let it filter to the rest.

Do not spam your sites with crap, search engines hate it, also do not spam your keyword as search engines hate this even more.
